Manchester City squandered a two-goal lead, resulting in a 2-2 draw against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on January 14, 2025.
After a goalless first half, Phil Foden broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, skillfully volleying in a cross from Kevin De Bruyne.
Foden doubled City’s advantage in the 78th minute, reacting swiftly to a rebound after Savinho’s initial shot was saved.
Brentford initiated their comeback in the 82nd minute when Yoane Wissa scored from close range, narrowing the deficit.
In stoppage time, Christian Nørgaard secured the equalizer with a glancing header that eluded goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, despite his attempt to save.
This result leaves Manchester City in sixth place with 35 points, 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
Manager Pep Guardiola attributed the late collapse to fatigue and the physicality of Brentford’s play, stating:
We just looked tired at the end in the last 20 minutes, we looked leggy.
Phil Foden echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the team’s fatigue and the challenges posed by Brentford’s physical approach.
Brentford’s resilience earned them a valuable point, moving them up to 10th place in the Premier League standings.
Christian Nørgaard expressed pride in the team’s comeback, stating:
We stayed in the game even though we were 2-0 down. We hung in there… And I’m proud of the way we managed to come back in the game.
Brentford manager, Thomas Frank meanwhile expressed immense pride in his team’s performance following their 2-2 draw against Manchester City. He remarked:
Coming back from two goals down against the reigning champions showcases our resilience and belief. The players demonstrated exceptional character and determination.
Manchester City will aim to rebound in their upcoming fixture against Ipswich Town, while Brentford looks to build on this momentum in their next match.
