Manchester City is facing setbacks in their efforts to strengthen their squad for the January transfer window.
Despite initial hopes of securing Juventus left-back Andrea Cambiaso, it appears that manager Thiago Motta has effectively closed the door on his departure.
The 24-year-old, whose contract runs until 2029, has been a target for Pep Guardiola, especially as City seeks a more natural left-back option.
However, Motta stated that Cambiaso is “untransferable” and confirmed he would play in Juventus’ upcoming fixture.
City’s defense has been a concern this season, with Guardiola admitting that the club might have made a mistake by not adding new players during the summer transfer window.
Although City remains keen to address defensive gaps, reports suggest that Cambiaso, who joined Juventus from Genoa in 2022, could cost €80m (£67.5m), a sum that might be too high for City at this time.
As Guardiola looks to bolster his backline, City is moving forward with deals for other players, including Lens’ Abdukodir Khusanov, Palmeiras’ Vitor Reis, and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush.
If all goes to plan, Marmoush will join as City’s third most expensive signing.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly shown interest in City winger Savinho, but City is expected to fend off any bids.
In other news, Kyle Walker, a regular full-back for City, may be on his way out, with AC Milan showing interest in him. However, Walker remains committed to City, and no deals are finalized yet.
Despite these transfer developments, Manchester City remains focused on securing the right reinforcements to climb back into Premier League contention.
