Manchester City has announced the signing of highly-rated Abdukodir Khusanov, a promising young Uzbek defender, from Lens on a four-and-a-half-year contract.
This deal sees Khusanov committed to City until the summer of 2029.
Khusanov’s Early Rise
Khusanov, who joined Lens from Belarusian side Energetik-BGU in the summer of 2023, has made an immediate impact in Ligue 1.
In just 31 appearances, the 20-year-old has impressed with his strong physicality, speed, and intelligence on the ball, making him one of the standout young defenders in France.
The Uzbek international, who has already earned 18 caps for his country, is set to become the first-ever Uzbek player to feature in the Premier League, marking an exciting milestone for both him and his national footballing legacy.
“I’ve always dreamed of playing for a club like Manchester City,” said Khusanov. “This squad has some of the best players in the world, and I’m eager to learn from them and from Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest coaches of all time.”
Khusanov’s Defensive Strengths
Khusanov’s physicality is one of his standout features. Standing over six feet tall, the defender is formidable in individual duels and aerial battles, making him well-suited for the Premier League’s demanding style.
His speed and positioning also set him apart, making him an effective presence in one-on-one situations and transitions.
He is also comfortable with the ball at his feet, a characteristic that aligns with City’s possession-based style.
Whether playing in a back three or as part of a traditional defensive line, Khusanov’s adaptability and composure on the ball will be crucial in Guardiola’s tactical setup.
Lens Coach and Teammates Praise Khusanov’s Potential
Khusanov’s potential has already been widely recognized. Lens coach Will Still praised him for his calmness, power, and speed.
Teammates, including goalkeeper Bryce Samba, have also been quick to highlight his maturity for such a young player, with Samba commenting, “He’s a monster… what he does for his age is incredible.”
Khusanov was named Ligue 1’s Young Player of the Month in October, cementing his place as one of the league’s most exciting emerging talents.
Txiki Begiristain’s Confidence in Khusanov
City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, expressed his excitement over the signing:
We are delighted to bring Abdukodir to the club. For someone so young, he already has impressive qualities – strength, speed, intelligence. Working with Pep Guardiola will only enhance his development, and we are excited to see how he contributes to our defensive line.
Begiristain also highlighted the club’s long-term vision, stating that Khusanov’s arrival is a key part of City’s plan to keep evolving and maintaining one of the best squads in Europe.
