Football pundit Paul Merson believes Chelsea will defeat Manchester City when the two sides meet at the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

Despite City’s recent improvement in form, Merson expects Cole Palmer to be a game-changer against his former club.

City’s Recent Form vs. Chelsea’s Struggles

Chelsea, under Enzo Maresca, started the season strongly but have won just one of their last six Premier League matches.

Meanwhile, City have bounced back after a difficult few months, remaining unbeaten in their last five league games. A win on Saturday would see Pep Guardiola’s side overtake Chelsea in the league table.

However, City’s 4-2 collapse against PSG in the Champions League has raised concerns about their ability to handle high-energy teams.

Merson: Chelsea’s Energy Will Trouble City

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Merson pointed out City’s defensive issues:

When PSG played with high energy, they went through City like a knife through butter. Brentford did the same. Some of their players are coming to the end, and they don’t have that same intensity anymore.

Merson sees Chelsea’s dynamic midfield and attack as a key advantage, particularly with Cole Palmer, who will be eager to impress against his former club.

I think Chelsea will beat them. Palmer will get into spaces, and I don’t see how City’s midfield can cope with him. Pedro Neto could also exploit their defense.

City’s Title Hopes Over?

Merson dismissed any chances of City re-entering the title race, predicting that they will only fight for a top-four finish.

They have Chelsea and Arsenal coming up, plus a tough Champions League tie against Club Brugge. I don’t see them getting back into the title race.

With Chelsea looking to reignite their season and City’s defensive weaknesses exposed, Merson would be shocked if Guardiola’s team wins.
