Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points.

First-half goals from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah set the Reds on course for victory, but a spirited second-half response from Wolves, capped by Matheus Cunha’s stunning strike, made for a tense finale.

Liverpool in Control

After a frustrating Merseyside derby draw in midweek, Liverpool were eager to make a strong start, and they did just that.

In the 15th minute, Luis Díaz broke his 10-game goal drought by capitalizing on a deflection off Wolves defender Toti Gomes to open the scoring.

Liverpool doubled their lead in the 37th minute when Díaz was brought down in the box by Wolves’ goalkeeper José Sá.

Referee Simon Hooper pointed to the spot, and Mohamed Salah calmly converted, scoring his 23rd league goal of the season. The Reds went into halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Wolves Fight Back

Despite their first-half struggles, Wolves came out stronger in the second half.

Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute when Matheus Cunha produced a moment of brilliance, curling a superb shot past Alisson to halve the deficit.

Liverpool’s defense came under significant pressure as Wolves pushed for an equalizer.

The visitors nearly leveled when debutant Marshall Munetsi forced a top save from Alisson, and Joao Gomes fired over from close range.

A late VAR decision overturned a second penalty call for Liverpool after replays showed minimal contact on Diogo Jota.

As the clock ran down, Wolves continued to press, but Liverpool held firm to secure three crucial points.

Did You Know?

  • With 30 victories in 40 matches across all competitions this season, Liverpool have won more games than any other club in Europe’s top five leagues. Only twice in their history—during the 2019-20 season (37 wins) and 1982-83 (39 wins)—have they reached this mark in fewer fixtures.
  • The Reds have now scored at least two goals in 17 consecutive home games across all competitions, matching their longest streak since joining the Football League in 1893. The only other time they achieved this feat was between February and November 2019.
  • For the first time since detailed records began in 2003-04, Liverpool did not attempt a single shot in the second half of a Premier League match at Anfield. It also marked their first instance of going an entire half without a shot in a home league fixture during this period.

What’s Next?

Liverpool face a tough run of fixtures, starting with a trip to Aston Villa before a massive showdown against Manchester City at the Etihad.

Wolves, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they visit Bournemouth in a crucial match at the bottom end of the table.

A nervy but vital win for Liverpool as they continue their march toward a potential 20th league title.
