Chelsea created a historic moment in their Premier League match against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon, marking a unique record in the league’s annals.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle visited Stamford Bridge to face Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea squad, who sought to bounce back after last week’s close 2-1 loss to Liverpool. Newcastle, meanwhile, aimed to recover following their defeat by Brighton.
According to The Sun, Chelsea’s starting lineup has set a new milestone as the only team in Premier League history to field their first eight games without a player older than 27.
Opta reported that Chelsea’s lineup against Newcastle was their second-youngest ever in the league, averaging 23 years and 89 days, just short of their record set in December 2023 against Crystal Palace.
In the match, Chelsea dominated as Nicolas Jackson scored in the 20th minute, though Alexander Isak equalized for Newcastle in the 32nd. Early in the second half, Cole Palmer put Chelsea back in the lead with a quick goal, securing a 2-1 victory.
Following the win, Chelsea climbed to fourth in the Premier League table ahead of Arsenal’s game against Liverpool. The Blues will next face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup before a challenging weekend fixture at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
