Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho have once again found themselves at the center of a war of words, reigniting their long-standing rivalry in football.
The latest controversy stems from comments made by both managers, touching on their accomplishments, ongoing legal disputes, and notions of fairness in competition.
The Spark: Guardiola’s Gesture at Anfield
The exchange began during Manchester City’s recent 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. Guardiola, responding to taunts from the crowd, gestured to signify his six Premier League titles. This action echoed a similar gesture Mourinho made in 2018 when he flaunted his three Premier League titles after Manchester United’s loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
When asked if his career might follow Mourinho’s trajectory, Guardiola quipped, “I hope not in my case,” highlighting his six league wins compared to Mourinho’s three. This lighthearted remark quickly escalated tensions.
Mourinho Fires Back
Jose Mourinho, now managing Turkish club Fenerbahce, was quick to retort, bringing up Manchester City’s ongoing legal battles over alleged breaches of financial regulations.
“I want to win but I want to win cleanly and fairly,” Mourinho said. “If I cannot win fairly, I prefer to lose. Guardiola won six trophies and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly. If I lost, I want to congratulate my opponent for being better than me. I don’t want to win by dealing with 150 lawsuits.”
The comments were a direct reference to City’s legal issues concerning Financial Fair Play, a matter the club has consistently denied wrongdoing in, with the case still under investigation.
Guardiola’s Response
Ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Crystal Palace, Guardiola addressed Mourinho’s remarks in a press conference.
“It was a joke,” Guardiola clarified. “It’s another one to add to the huge list of people who want the team in League One or the Conference. But we are innocent until proven guilty, so after that, we will see what happens. But it is what it is, it was completely a joke.”
Despite expressing regret if his comment offended Mourinho, Guardiola couldn’t resist a cheeky dig: “If I have offended him (Mourinho), I am so sorry. But it was a joke. The fact is he has three [Premier League titles] and I have six, it is a fact. But the intention was completely fine.”
Putting It Into Perspective
Guardiola also acknowledged Mourinho’s achievements while comparing their legacy to other legendary managers.
“I think both of us — him (Mourinho) with Chelsea, myself with City — we can sit at the table with Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, right?” Guardiola said. “For the many titles we won. And I’m pretty sure sooner or later they will congratulate us.”
Amid the off-pitch drama, Guardiola’s Manchester City remains focused on improving their on-field performance. Having ended a seven-match winless streak with a victory against Nottingham Forest, the team now aims to build on that momentum in their upcoming fixtures.
