Mikel Arteta remains steadfast in his belief that Arsenal must continue to “fight to win every game,” even though their Premier League title hopes appear to be fading.
The Gunners, currently in second place, trail leaders Liverpool by 15 points after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Manchester United extended their winless run to three league matches.
Having finished as runners-up to Manchester City in the past two seasons, Arsenal now shift their focus to the Champions League, where they have a commanding advantage over PSV Eindhoven following a dominant 7-1 first-leg victory.
Arteta’s Determination
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s return fixture at the Emirates, Arteta emphasized the team’s relentless drive:
“We are going to carry on fighting to win every game,” the Spanish coach stated.
“There are the demands we put on ourselves in every competition. We are very much conscious that the demands for this football club are to reach the highest level and to win football matches.
“There’s always improvement. We have talked about what we can do better, it’s about execution. My job is to give the players as many tools so we can deliver again.”
Despite missing key players Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz due to injury, Arsenal showcased their attacking depth with six different scorers in their emphatic win over PSV.
Champions League Ambitions
The Gunners, who have never won the Champions League, are expected to progress to the quarter-finals, where they would face either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.
“It’s a competition that we have a lot of enthusiasm for. We have been very consistent and tomorrow can put us in an exciting position,” Arteta said.
Saliba’s Perspective
Defender William Saliba is eager to help Arsenal end their wait for silverware, with their last major triumph coming in the 2020 FA Cup final against Chelsea.
“I think we are very close, we need to keep going,” Saliba said.
“We can’t stop working. When you’re close and don’t win trophies it’s sad. With work we will make a big step and I am sure we will arrive there.
“Everyone wants to win the Champions League, it’s a competition that’s hard to win, anything can happen.”
As Arsenal look to secure their place in the next round, the focus remains on maintaining their competitive edge and pushing for success on multiple fronts.
