Chelsea’s left-back Ben Chilwell could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge before the January transfer window slams shut, with Crystal Palace reportedly making a late move to secure his services on loan.

Chilwell Frozen Out at Chelsea

Since Enzo Maresca took over as Chelsea manager, Chilwell has struggled for game time, with Marc Cucurella, Reece James, Malo Gusto, and Renato Veiga (before his loan to Juventus) all preferred in the left-back position.

The 28-year-old has been left out of Chelsea’s Premier League matchday squads entirely and has played just once this season—a brief 45-minute outing against League Two side Barrow in the Carabao Cup.

Maresca had advised Chilwell in August to leave the club in search of more minutes, a suggestion that has so far gone unheeded. Despite being praised by his manager in press conferences, Chilwell remains on the sidelines.

Crystal Palace Looking to Strengthen

According to multiple reports, Crystal Palace has reached out to Chelsea regarding a possible loan deal.

The Eagles, who have been improving under manager Oliver Glasner, are looking to add depth to their squad.

Chilwell is seen as an ideal player to challenge Tyrick Mitchell in Glasner’s three-at-the-back system, which relies on strong wing-backs.

Negotiations with Chilwell’s representatives have reportedly begun, though no deal is imminent.

If the move materializes, Chelsea may have to cover part of Chilwell’s substantial wages, which are believed to be around £190,000 per week.

Chilwell’s Career So Far

Chilwell joined Chelsea in 2020 from Leicester City for £45 million, making 123 appearances for the Foxes before his move.

He has earned 21 caps for England, though injuries have hampered his chances of securing a regular place in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

With limited options at Chelsea, a move to Palace could offer him a fresh start and a chance to revive his career in the Premier League.
