Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has criticized manager Enzo Maresca’s handling of left-back Ben Chilwell as reported by Chelsea News.

Johnson believes Chilwell, 27, is more than capable of playing for Chelsea, despite being told he’s not part of Maresca’s plans.

Ben’s more than good enough to be playing for Chelsea, and I do believe it’s silly sometimes when a new manager comes into a club with a preconceived idea of their team before they’ve even worked with the players.

Chilwell’s future at Chelsea was uncertain after an injury-plagued pre-season, with Maresca encouraging him to find a new club. However, a move failed to materialize due to his reported £200,000-per-week wages.

Johnson questioned Maresca’s approach, suggesting Chilwell wasn’t given a fair chance.

“It’s evident that the players in the ‘bomb squad’ didn’t even get a chance to impress Maresca, so in that sense, I don’t think it’s fair on Ben Chilwell,” Johnson noted.

Chilwell has since been reintegrated into Chelsea’s squad and may feature in the EFL Cup match against Barrow.

Maresca’s decision-making has raised questions, with Johnson’s comments highlighting the tension surrounding Chilwell’s situation.

Despite his reintegration, Chilwell’s long-term future at Chelsea remains uncertain. With several clubs reportedly interested in securing his services, it remains to be seen whether the 27-year-old will stay at Stamford Bridge beyond the January transfer window.
