As Manchester City grapples with an uncharacteristically rough patch, manager Pep Guardiola has come to the defense of star striker Erling Haaland, insisting that the team’s struggles are not solely his responsibility.

City has slipped to seventh in the Premier League standings, managing only one win in their last eight league matches.

Haaland, who set records last season with his goal-scoring exploits, has found the net just twice during this challenging period. However, Guardiola was quick to shift the focus away from the Norwegian striker.

“This is not about Erling or any single player,” Guardiola said during a press conference. “We win and lose as a team. There are areas where we need to improve collectively, and we are working hard on those.”

An Unusual Dip in Form

For a team accustomed to dominance under Guardiola, City’s recent struggles have raised eyebrows. Defensive lapses, a dip in midfield control, and inconsistent performances from key players have all contributed to the team’s slump.

City’s midfield, once a fortress with Kevin De Bruyne orchestrating attacks, has appeared disjointed at times. De Bruyne’s absence due to a long-term injury has left a void that summer signing Mateo Kovacic and Phil Foden are still adapting to fill.

Guardiola also pointed to the team’s defensive frailties. “We’ve conceded goals in situations where we used to be solid,” he admitted. “It’s something we need to address immediately.”

Support for Haaland

Haaland, who scored an astounding 52 goals in all competitions last season, has faced criticism for failing to replicate that form in recent weeks.

However, Guardiola dismissed the notion that the striker’s performances are to blame for the team’s struggles.

“Erling remains a fantastic player for us,” Guardiola said. “When the team plays well, he scores. When we struggle as a team, his chances become limited. It’s a team sport, and every player has a role to play.”

A Turning Point Ahead

Manchester City will look to bounce back when they take on Everton at Etihad Stadium on boxing day. Guardiola emphasized the importance of unity and resilience as the team seeks to regain its footing.

“We’ve faced challenges before, and we’ve always come back stronger,” he said. “I have no doubt this group will do the same.”

Title Race in Question

Despite their current position, Guardiola refused to concede the title race. With just over half the season remaining, he believes there is still time for City to climb the table and challenge for silverware.

“We’re not out of it yet,” Guardiola declared. “But we must find consistency and confidence again. It starts with hard work, and it starts now.”

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on City to see whether Guardiola can orchestrate another remarkable turnaround, with Haaland expected to play a crucial role in their revival.
