Erling Haaland was absent from Manchester City’s squad for their crucial match against Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola has now shed light on the Norwegian’s condition and when he could be back in action.

Why Was Haaland Left Out?

Haaland sustained a knee injury during City’s win over Newcastle last weekend. He barely made the bench for their Champions League fixture against Real Madrid and was left out entirely for the showdown with Liverpool.

Ahead of the game, Guardiola explained Haaland’s absence:

Yesterday after training, he didn’t feel good. Over the years, we have played without important players and survived. But this season, we’ve had too many injuries, and sometimes, we couldn’t manage.

When asked about a possible return date, Guardiola added:

He has improved, but he still doesn’t feel good. Hopefully, he’ll be back against Spurs, but we’ll see. He’ll return when he feels ready.

The manager also confirmed that Haaland has undergone tests to assess the extent of the injury.

City Struggle Without Their Star Striker

Haaland’s absence was felt immediately as Liverpool took control at the Etihad.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the 14th minute before setting up Dominik Szoboszlai for a second. The visitors went into halftime with a commanding 2-0 lead.

What’s Next for City?

Manchester City will hope to have Haaland back when they face Tottenham Hotspur in North London on Wednesday.

However, Guardiola will need to find solutions fast as City risk falling further behind in the title race.
