Reece James made a triumphant return to Premier League action, delivering a sensational 95th-minute equalizer to secure a point for Chelsea against Bournemouth.
The captain, sidelined for much of the season due to persistent hamstring injuries, marked his comeback with a stunning free-kick.
“It was lonely and frustrating,” James admitted to BBC Radio 5 Live, reflecting on his injury woes. “I am really happy to be back helping the team.”
The England international, who has played just 275 Premier League minutes this season, looked overjoyed as his free-kick found the net.
The strike, described by Glenn Murray as having “pace, power, and a little bit of swerve,” was a moment of redemption for the 25-year-old.
Injury-Stricken Campaign
James has endured a challenging period, plagued by repeated injuries that limited him to just five Premier League appearances this season. Since being appointed Chelsea captain last campaign, he has managed to start only eight top-flight matches.
His return to form began with a 45-minute appearance in Chelsea’s FA Cup clash against Morecambe, before coming off the bench in the 56th minute against Bournemouth.
Tasked with defending tricky winger Antoine Semenyo, James impressed defensively before stepping up with the game’s defining moment.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca praised James’ resilience and skill, noting:
Reece can compare with Cole [Palmer] in terms of free-kicks because he is very good. We decided for Reece, and he scored. We are all happy because at least we took a point.
For James, the goal symbolized more than just a point—it was a step forward in a season fraught with challenges.
“Now, the target for him is to be fit until the end,” Maresca added, emphasizing the importance of James’ fitness for Chelsea’s long-term ambitions.
England Recall on the Horizon?
Despite being absent from the England squad since March 2023, James remains optimistic about his international prospects.
Speaking to TNT Sports, he hinted at a potential recall, saying, “[England manager Thomas Tuchel] knows my capabilities.”
James enjoyed some of his best performances under Tuchel’s Chelsea tenure, including a standout showing in the 2021 Champions League final. His recent displays will undoubtedly rekindle hopes of a return to the national team fold.
The Road Ahead
Chelsea’s campaign has been a rollercoaster, but James’ return provides a glimmer of hope. With his leadership and undeniable talent, the Blues will aim to build momentum as they look to climb the Premier League table.
For James, the focus is clear: staying fit and continuing to deliver for his team.
His late heroics against Bournemouth are a promising sign that the captain is ready to lead Chelsea into brighter days ahead.
