Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Anfield on October 20, 2024, in a thrilling Premier League clash. The win, which keeps Liverpool top of the table, was hard-fought, with both teams showing resilience.

The match started energetically, with Chelsea initially pressing high, but it was Liverpool who took the lead in the 29th minute.

Mohamed Salah put the Reds ahead with a calmly taken penalty after Curtis Jones was fouled by Chelsea’s Levi Colwill.

Despite a dominating first half from Liverpool, they missed an opportunity to double their lead as a second penalty awarded just before half-time was overturned by VAR.

Chelsea responded quickly in the second half, equalizing in the 48th minute through Nicolas Jackson, whose goal was initially flagged offside but later confirmed by VAR. However, Liverpool regained their lead just three minutes later, with Curtis Jones converting a perfect cross from Salah.

Liverpool controlled much of the game, showcasing Arne Slot’s tactical prowess and high-intensity football, which outmatched Chelsea’s defensive efforts.

This win strengthens Liverpool’s title ambitions, while Chelsea, still adjusting under new manager Enzo Maresca, suffered their first league defeat since August.

What Managers said

“The better the teams you face the more you need [fight],” Slot said. “In the Premier League, there are so many good teams so if you want to win at least you need to fight and then hopefully the individuals can make the difference.”

“We don’t like losing games, dropping points but if you have to decide the way, then this is probably the way,” Maresca said afterwards. “I’ve been in the stadium many times and have seen Liverpool for a long time — it’s not easy. I think overall, we controlled the game and for most parts of the game we dominated the game, but we lost.”
