Chelsea have received a major boost with the news that club captain Reece James has returned to full training.
The right-back, who has been sidelined since August due to a hamstring injury picked up in pre-season, is now on the verge of making his first competitive appearance under new manager Enzo Maresca.
James, 24, missed the opening matches of the season, including a four-game suspension carried over from last year’s campaign.
Despite these setbacks, the Blues’ captain is now back in “team training,” as confirmed by the club, signaling a positive step toward his long-awaited return.
The England international has been plagued by injuries over the past year, starting just five Premier League games last season and undergoing surgery on his hamstring in December.
During Chelsea’s pre-season, however, James featured regularly and expressed enthusiasm about working under Maresca.
“There are a lot of adjustments to make to the new system,” James said in the summer. “Whenever a new manager comes in, there’s a lot to take on board, but we are excited, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Now fully focused on his comeback, James is optimistic about the upcoming season. “The last 16 months have been frustrating, whether due to suspension or injury,” he admitted. “But I’m really excited. I feel like I’m in a good place for this season, and I cannot wait to get playing and find my rhythm again.”
Chelsea fans will be hopeful that the captain’s return brings renewed strength to the defense as the Blues aim to climb the Premier League table. With James back in training, the club’s future fixtures may see him reclaim his place on the pitch soon.
