Manchester City has named Rodri in their updated Champions League squad for the knockout stages, despite the midfielder still recovering from a knee injury.

The Spanish international, who has been out since September, will miss both legs of City’s playoff tie against Real Madrid but could return later in the competition.

City has also added their January signings—Omar Marmoush, Nico González, and Abdukodir Khusanov—to the squad. However, young Brazilian defender Vitor Reis, who joined from Palmeiras for €35 million, has been omitted.

Having finished 22nd in the league phase, City faces a challenging playoff against Real Madrid, with the first leg at the Etihad Stadium next week and the return leg at the Bernabéu on Feb. 19.

Cautious Approach to Rodri’s Comeback

Despite his squad inclusion, Rodri’s return to action remains uncertain. Pep Guardiola has urged patience, warning against rushing the midfielder back too soon.

“Rodri is a key player for us, but his long-term fitness is the priority. We will not take any unnecessary risks,” Guardiola stated.

Under UEFA regulations, City was allowed three changes to their squad for the knockout rounds. With four new signings in January, Guardiola had to leave one out—opting to omit Reis, who has yet to make his debut for the club.

While Rodri’s absence will be felt in the short term, City remains focused on their European campaign as they aim to defend their Champions League title.

His inclusion in the squad suggests he could play a vital role if they progress further in the tournament.
